The reason I chose nursing as a career is in High School
(David Prouty High), I joined the nursing program which
was started by the school nurse and a few other students.
In this program we had chances to be able to shadow nurses
in different specialties.  I was lucky to be able to go to the
OR and observe a few surgeries; one that stuck by me was an
open heart surgery that was being performed on a relatively
young man in his mid-40s, who had been waiting for a transplant
for a lengthy period of time.   I was just amazed and puzzled by
how well the environment was controlled and everyone in there from circulating nurses, scrub
nurses, surgical tech, anesthesiologists, and the surgeon himself were all involved in complete
teamwork and also were there to aid each other.  The timeout and every single step and protocol
were followed, and in the midst of it all they were all still very personable, calm, and collected.  I
remember watching and thinking to myself, “wow, the human body is extremely amazing how it
can adjust to so many things that happen throughout life, and all the people helping save/extend
this man’s life without judging or even thinking twice.”

At that point in time I became very interested, well extremely interested in the human body and
became very passionate to learn about it.  So many thoughts ran through my head and I realized
with the knowledge I acquire how much I can help other people stricken ill with diseases,
understand their disease process, signs and symptoms to watch for, what to report, what should
be expected, and what to avoid, and in turn help enhance their lives to their full extent and not be
limited and governed by their disease, but to take control and still have as much of a positive life
as they can.

When ill, as human beings it’s our nature to tend to become emotionally vulnerable and knowing
someone is there to truly help you through those times and genuinely cares for your well being
gives us all a sense of security and even lowers your vulnerability, which in turn helps the patient
have a more positive outlook on their illness.  I always keep this in mind and try to be there for my
patients as I would a family member, or would appreciate someone to be compassionate and
empathetic towards me if I was the patient.  The reward that I get at the end of my day knowing I
have helped better someone else’s life, and made them feel and know that others do care for their
well-being is the best feeling I could ask for.

MASPAN has developed a scholarship fund to assist the membership with professional development.  We
offer scholarship money toward the pursuit of advanced degrees, certification, ongoing continuing education
at ASPAN and MASPAN Seminars.
Have you been considering taking the certification exam to become a CPAN or CAPA?  Is this your year to
recertify and need assistance?  Have you always wanted to attend National Conference but find that your
hospital cannot assist you in covering the costs?  Are you thinking of going back to school for your
BSN/MSN?  Consider applying for scholarship assistance.
The MASPAN Board of Directors has established criteria to determine eligibility and to assist them in the
selection process.  If you have been attending MASPAN seminars regularly, recruited a new member, written
an article for the newsletter, or had fun putting together a gift basket for a seminar raffle, you are definitely in
the running!
Please review the application and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to assist you in your
professional growth.

Nursing Student Scholarship

MASPAN offers a student nurse scholarship to assist a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an
accredited program towards a nursing career.  This is a wonderful opportunity to invest in the future of the
profession and introduce a student nurse to the opportunities that await them in their professional
organizations.
Do you have student nurses currently working in your area?   How about a nursing assistant who is working
in your unit and is struggling to meet the demands of nursing school as well as a work schedule.
Please encourage them to avail themselves of this opportunity.  I am quite sure they will be touched by your
mentoring and personal vote of confidence.

Donations to MASPAN Scholarship Fund

Have you ever considered giving a donation to the Scholarship Fund?  Here are some opportunities to
consider.  Perhaps you would like to honor a colleague in your unit who is retiring or leaving your unit for a
new job after years of service.  What better way to show your appreciation for their contributions to the
nursing profession than by donating money to advance another’s professional development.
Having difficulties generating ideas to celebrate PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week?    Consider raising
money for the Scholarship Fund both to promote PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week and at the same
time provide an educational opportunity for a fellow colleague or student nurse.
Providing assistance to others contributes to further development of our specialty organization, ensuring
that we will continue to foster high standards in the years to come.
MASPAN will acknowledge your donation in our newsletter  Mayflower
